Choosing the Right Retirement Community For Your Loved One

Castlemeadow Care • August 7, 2020

Choosing a senior living community for your loved one is a monumental decision.

The process can easily become overwhelming, especially considering all of the options throughout the Norfolk area. Here at Castlemeadow Care, we want to help you make the best decision for your loved one. When looking for a retirement community, consider the following:

Their Mission - Every retirement community is different. Each has a different mission, values, and purpose. At Castlemeadow Care, our mission is to make the most out of our resident's lives. We truly care about our residents, aiming to build real relationships with each person. We take the time to learn about our resident's lives, their interests, and their hobbies so we can help them live life the way they choose to.

Your First Impression - It goes without saying that you should physically visit any and all retirement communities you are considering for your loved one. While you're there, pay attention to the weather, atmosphere, and the way the staff behaves. Does the food look appetising? Are the dining room and common areas clean? Are the patient rooms cozy? Trust your gut and rely on your first impression.

The Location - If visiting your loved one regularly is high on your priority list, you may want to find a retirement community that is not a long drive from your home. Does your loved one dream of spending their days on the countryside? Or would they prefer a more urban vibe? Consider their desires and the potential conveniences that a certain location can offer.

Access to Medical Appointments & Entertainment - Does your loved one enjoy visiting a particular restaurant every week? Do they have medical needs that need to be attended to on a regular basis? If you choose a senior living community far from their doctors or favorite places, the trips can become a hassle or they may miss out on their favorite activities.

Level of Service - Not all senior living communities provide the same level of care and service. Are you looking for something that is more like independent living? Does your loved one need a lot of daily assistance? Do they need memory or dementia care? Be sure to ask the facility about the services they offer to ensure your loved one is thoroughly taken care of.

Additional Activities & Events - Just like the rest of us, seniors want to feel engaged and included in their community. Does the senior living facility you're interested in have activities and events that are all-inclusive? Do they have programs designed around your loved one's special needs? Consider your loved ones interests and enquire if they have any events or activities that coordinate with them!
